The Veterans of Foreign Wars traces itsroots back to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War (1898) and thePhilippine Insurrection (1899-1902) founded localorganizations to securerights and benefits for their service: Many arrived home wounded or sick. Therewas no medical care or veterans' pension for them, and they were left to carefor themselves. In their misery, some ofthese veterans banded together and formed organizations with what would becomeknown as the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States.
The VFW has beeninstrumental in establishing the Veterans Administration, creating a GI billfor the 20th century, improving VA medical centers services forwomen veterans, developing the national cemetery system and the fight for compensation forVietnam vets exposed to Agent Orange and for veteransdiagnosed with Gulf WarSyndrome.
